A1 Mirrors - Our Home At The Swan Centre

We at A1 Mirrors are very proud to be based within the Swan Centre and we’ve done some research to find out more about our home and how important it was to the world’s cotton industry.

The complex is made up of three mills – Mill 1 was completed in 1902 and Mill 2 in 1905 and designed by Stott & Sons. The two mills are joined together to make one of the first ‘double’ mills and was claimed to be one of the largest spinning mills in the world under one roof, which the title reportedly was lost in 1907. In 1914, Mill 3 was constructed but is not joined to the other two. The chimney of mill 3 was shortened by Fred Dibnah, the famous Bolton steeplejack that took down many of the town’s chimneys throughout the years.

Whilst mill 1 and 2 where joined, they both had separate functions, mill 1 would concentrate on spinning sea Island cotton and mill 2 on medium Egyptian cotton. By 1922 the complex had over 300,000 spindles and continued to operate until approx. 1996.

Originally beginning production as the Swan Lane Spinning Co. Ltd. (the name still on show) a company call Courtaulds occupied the sites from 1974 until 1996 when they sold them off due to a decline in the spinning business, to Shiloh.

The mills are now grade 2 listed and we are based within mills 1 and 2 which now house many other businesses like ourselves and a self storage facility under the new name of The Swan Centre and Adams Selfstore. The centre is its own community where many business owners come together to share advice, tips and general networking.
